Nitrate is the contaminant of most concern in rural Oklahoma wells, and it is invisible and tasteless. It comes from fertilizer, septic systems and livestock.
It is particularly dangerous for infants under six months. Boiling does not remove it and actually concentrates it. Treatment requires reverse osmosis, distillation or ion exchange. Test annually if you are on a private well.
