That arrangement creates an obvious incentive, so here is how we handle it. Roughly half the answers on this site carry no phone number at all, because the honest answer is that you can fix the thing yourself in ten minutes. Soak the aerator in vinegar. Put food coloring in the toilet tank. Reset the GFCI. Those pages make us nothing and they are the reason the pages that do carry a number are worth trusting.

We never put a phone number on a life-safety instruction. If you smell gas, if a power line is down, if a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, the correct call is to your utility or to 911, and monetizing that moment would be indefensible. Those pages tell you what to do and stop there.

We do not vet or endorse the contractors who receive these calls beyond the requirements of the network that routes them. Ask for licensing, liability insurance and workers’ compensation before anyone works on your property. Get a second quote on anything substantial. We are telling you to do that even though a slower decision is worse for us, because the alternative is a site that exists to frighten you into calling, and that is a bad site.
